Agnostic literally means "without knowledge." It's the belief that we simply do not know what's out there in the religion and/or supernatural sense. Agnostic theism is the belief that one does not know or claim to know a deity, but see that one way or another there is some sort of deity that is above us and controls us. I view this as a safe bet that it's correct; It's not specific, but Agnostic theism, to me, basically means, "I do not know what is out there, but there is something, it could be anything." Now, let's view a few things. First, lets take a view of a person having superstitions. Inherently, if you have superstitions, something must control this belief. For example, if you are driving and a black cat crossing the road, some people view that if you continue driving forward, you will have bad luck. Or, some people knock on wood three times because they said something that they do not want to happen. Inherently, if you have any superstitions, you must belief in some power that controls the superstitions.
Now, back to Agnostic theism. I belief that there is some sort of deity out there, but we have no idea what it is and do not claim to. Thus, I believe that the odds of there being a God is the same as us being an Alien experiment to that of us existing in a world portrayed in the "Matrix" movie series. Anything could be out there, and because we do not know what, the odds of anything one can think of is even to that of any other thought. Christian God, alien experiment, machines using us as fuel and us living in an imaginary world, reincarnation, and anything else you can think of have the same odds of being true.
That's something to think about when pondering the universe.

More commentsHi Gregory, A well presented article. Of course we already know where we differ on things, but let's discuss karma. Do you not ever see anyone who does more bad than that which happens to him? Or more good than happens in return? You know that it is not equal and fair, so how could it be even related? Some good, by nature returns good, in the form of personal satisfaction and such like. But let's say you rescue some people from a burning home, then several years later you and your family are burned to death in a fire. Where is the karma? The whole Karma idea doesn't work on its own - we often see bad things happen to good people and vice versa. I guess that's why the idea of reincarnation is often closely related to that of karma - sure we may not see the karma happening in this life, but it will happen eventually in a future one.Without reincarnation, karma doesn't really stand up to scrutiny - the evidence is clearly comes out against it!Once you had reincarnation into the mix we're into mystic territory - where we can "never know".What I just responded to Joel is almost exactly what you said.I didn' even read you comment as I was responded to Joel.Me and you, Ben, seem to be on the same page here.Good question Joel. This is just a thought, I don't' really have an answer to your question; honestly, none of us have an answer to that.In your case, a guy saved a family from a burning file and than years later him and his family to burned to death. What is Karma exceeds mortality.I do think the life we live here on Earth, however long it make seem, is a blink in reality. And I do think we exist, in one way or another, for much, much longer; we are all older than a million years in my opinion! My point is that lets say the Karma gets transfered live this; The guy is reincarnated, into a rich family, a powerful family, and he gets many benefits others don't get. Same for his family that died.So I do believe in what I'm going to call, "Karma past mortality"?But it's just one factor in the scheme of things.Does the above make any sense?
Interesting article! If we are the creation of alien beings, then I wouldn't consider those beings as gods / deities....I get the impression from your article that you would, but I might be misunderstanding you there?anyway, great stuff, looking forward to reading more from you!
Hi Gregory, interesting article full of personal wonder in which I'm sure you will get your truthful answer one day.Keep the great topics coming.Deborah
Much of what you say I agree with, with one exeption. As a fan of science I see God in everything. Such complexity could not have happened by accident, but by design. Nice job of writing, though.
Making Christ the Lord of my life and making Him my very best friend was the solution for me. Linda D
Hello and thank you to everybody for the comments. These are just my reflects as I am leaning towards being an Agnostic Theism subscriber. As for the Matrix mention in my article, it's scary, but it's possible; What if its really the year 2676 and we depended on machines so much that eventually they took over and we tried to block and sun and than they use us as batteries and insert our mind into an artificial world called the Matrix. Scary thought but it's possible. As a side note, if that really is the case, I would prefer not knowing that that is the case. That would suck. lol.
Hello Gregory, I hope this comment finds you well.....I do believe in karma, in other words, "What goes around, Comes around", bad or good....that is my karma. I wanted to address your statement and I quote ;"Now, back to Agnostic theism. Christian God, alien experiment, machines using us as fuel and us living in an imaginary world, reincarnation, and anything else you can think of have the same odds of being true".I believe that you make a good point. I don't really think that this is something that can be disputed, rather, it is based on ones belief, and the way they were raised. I chose Christianity, based souly on the "Good book", and and what I have been exposed to and taught, not to mention faith. Have I ever seen God? No, but yet I still believe in him. It's like "Air", even though you don't see it, doesn't mean you don't breath it. Of course that is common sense. So in short I'm not feeling that you are saying "Don't believe in God", I believe that you are voicing an opinion as to what the potentials are to ponder. Pondering is good, it draws me that much closer to my faith in God.You wrote a great article, thought provoking as usual, and keep up the good work, your fan and friend in pen....Gary.liThank you Gary for noticing that part of my article. Its kind of like this:If a person says they ONLY believe in God, it cannot be 100% true. What I am saying is anything is possible. That means I'm 100% right. It's kind of cheating, but by saying "is could be ANYTHING" inherently means I'm right. hehe. Thanks for your comments, I appreciate it!
The search for truth leads us up and down many paths yet the pursuit is what counts. Best wishes.
Very well-written and thoughtful article, Gregory; but then, all of your articles are exceptionally thought-provoking. You actually related some of my own sentiments. I agree to not knowing what is out there, but my faith in my Bible tells me there is a greater Being. I don't for a moment believe everything was accidental, but I don't believe we are an experiment. Thanks for giving us something to think about.Have a great day and keep up the good work.SandraThank you Sandra. Your comments always make me blush. Some scientists take a few cells from a bacteria and culture it so it grows into a huge amount of said bacteria. Why not a super advanced alien race being doing something similar to us?I'm not saying I believe in that; I'm saying that odds of that bineg our higher power is the ame as anything else.Just a thought.Of course, if we are the creation of super-advanced aliens we are faced with the question of where THEY came from :)Now thats a good point.
Humanity is ascending and we all must make the spiritual evolution for the survival of the human experience.Have you ever watched the show "Stargate SG1" or "Stargate Atlantis" before? Those shows show one way acension would work; Basically living on a higher plane of existance. That would be intereseting.
